mmmm... recoil...
went to Surplus City range today, bought a scope and had them zero my .444.
then i shot it 3 times. it was my FIRST time ever shooting a .444. let me tell you, i have shot a lot of single shot shotguns with highbrass heavy loads in my time, so i didnt think this would be much different. it definately got my attenttion when i pulled that trigger.
it isnt ALL that bad considering what it COULD be, but it is by far the worst in the recoil department of any gun i have ever owned or shot. it makes me look forward to shooting my Ruger No. 1 in 7mm Rem. mag. i cant wait to shoot it again!!

Make sure your scope has plenty of eye relief my buddy had a Marlin Guide Gun in
45-70 first time he shot it we had to make a trip to the ER he got 4 stitches under his eye. He ended up selling the gun after that, said he could not hit anything with it because he would flinch with every shot.

My buddy wanted to practically give me a leupold but it only had like 2 inches eye relief. So I bought the nikon. I've been bit before and I'll tell ya, it only takes once to learn your lesson. Lol
This one has a good 4" from the bridge of my nose to the ring, AND the scope has a rubber band around it on back to soften the blow

Hmmmm...I've always considered my 444 to be pretty tame at 23 ft lbs....see recoil table sticky...7 mag is 19 lbs...not much diff
Maybe I can handle that 338 Win Mag after all.....its 33 lbs

Since I used to shoot .375 H&H I am pretty sure I can handle a 444. I have also shot +P+ loads in my Marlin 45-70. They are verified to go completely through a Rhino, hip to front left shoulder. I didn't verify it for myself though. What I have verified is that .375 H&H will shoot a hole through a live oak that is 59 inches in diameter. The exit hole was still round. The bullet didn't even break up. It was a solid copper bullet my friend cut for me. 255 grain boattail.

It's been a couple of years since I went to surplus city. Let us shoot for free since someone bought a pistol. I rented a Beretta 9mm carbine, good investment because I found out I didn't like it. I didn't know they had a rifle range also. Thanks for the info Joe.

So do I Joe!
We bought my dad a Marlin Guide gun 18" barrel for Christmas last year, in .450 Marlin.
It has some recoil to it, but not what I thought it would be. But then again, recoil does not bother me like it does others.

Re: mmmm... recoil...
Hardest kickers? My experience....
1. Benelli Nova 3.5" Turkey loads.
2. Remington 700 416 Remington Magnum (no muzzle brake)
3. Weatherby 460 Magnum (felt recoil less than 416 due to muzzle brake)
4. Marlin 45-70 with some hot handloads.
5. Weatherby Mark V 375 H&H Magnum
